James Joyce the renowned Irish author described the Atlantic ocean as a “Bowl of Bitter Tears”. He was of course alluding to the trauma of separation from the homeland of the Irish emigrant when immigrating to America.
All stories of immigration are linked in some way by stretches of ocean and long ship journeys – measured in days, weeks and sometimes months. For those on board, it was usually the longest and most significant journey of their lives.
