Description

The 12th Regiment proceeded into Ballarat after marching for some days from Melbourne. They arrived around nine or ten o’clock and were pelted with bottles, sticks and stones by the diggers on the Eureka Lead. The drummer boy was hurt and supposedly killed, carts overturned and others injured.  Benden Sherritt Hassell, a hotel keeper, was shot in the leg at this fracas on 28 November 1854 days before the Eureka Stockade battle. This book contains the report of the incident as well as around 1000 names from the compensation case of Hassell.
